A couple days ago Howard Owens sent me a message asking me to film a local football game for him, so I agreed to do it. I ended up getting there with my friend Destin a few minutes late, which turned out to be fine since nothing exciting happened while we werent there. Then I set up my monstrous Bogen 3066 tripod with my tiny HV20. After getting that level and set I realized I was going to have to move around the field the entire time. Which was a good thing for shooting, since the shots werent from just one angle, but killed my wrist. But it was good excercise and ended up being a ton of fun. I’m pretty happy with the way to video turned out, although because of technical difficulties, I didn’t get sound.Heres the video. Enjoy!

So the other day I was chatting on Twitter with Christopher Hopper (@find_ch) and he asked me what my thoughts on a DIY shoulder mount for his newly purchased Canon T2i. This reminded me of my own attempt at a DIY shoulder mount a couple months ago. Below is a picture of my end result.

Not too bad for less then $10 in PVC, metal, and a little ingenuity. From my own experience, heres what I learned. Measure twice, check three times, cut once (twice if needed). The biggest step I didn’t do as well as I should have was check three times. I would quickly “try it on” and then cut. Which wasn’t the best idea. My shoulder mount works, but the spot where I mount my camera isn’t necessarily where I would like it. Below I’ve compiled a list of links to my personal favorites I’ve seen. Post a comment below if you have any you’d like to add to the list.http://www.cinema5d.com/viewtopic.php?f=75&t=15621http://www.cinema5d.com/viewtopic.php?f=75&t=14078http://www.cinema5d.com/viewtopic.php?f=75&t=12777http://cheesycam.com/?p=782http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KW2DY36eMxo&feature=relatedhttp://www.cinema5d.com/viewtopic.php?f=75&t=10863http://www.cinema5d.com/viewtopic.php?f=75&t=9820

So a couple weeks ago I created a “fan” page for myself on Facebook. Now I know that sounds conceited, but thats not why I created it. My goal is to market myself. Sounds kind of weird but its worked for other people, so I thought I would give it a shot. Since I enjoy hosting podcasts, videos, etc. I’m going to try and market my personality. So anything and everything I create thats not specifically done for JPT Media will be marketed as eg: Producedby Ethan Thompson. So if people enjoy what I do, or at least are interested I may be able to create a “following”. Which could then be used to market other peoples material, or my own, and at some point God-willing make me some cash. SO, become a fan of me on Facebook and follow me on Twitter!

It took me several weeks to compile this list. So I thought I would save a lot of other people some time and post it. Some of these blogs are about filmmaking in general but mention DSLR’s often. If you know of any I missed please post a comment with the URL. Last month I entered FedEx’s “Brown Bailout” video contest. About five minutes ago I checked the site to see if I ended up making it to the top 30 and I did! So, I would highly appreciate it if you could go to the following link http://bit.ly/4p0Rwu Look for the video by Amy Thompson and then click on it. Then click on the button below the video that says “Vote for this video”. Thank you for your support and help!

Hey guys! Sorry I haven’t posted in awhile. I’ve been busy doing a whole slew of different things. Earlier this month I filmed some political interviews for The Batavian. That was great learning experience and lots of fun to shoot. The first day of filming I only had my XL1, so every shot counted. Then the next day I took along my Canon ZR700 and set it on a shelf to get a continuos wide shot. That way I could get close ups and not have to worry about doing smooth pans or tilts with the XL1.Last week I spend some time redesigning JPT media’s website and I’m very happy with the way that turned out. I just took a cool theme and changed it up a bit and made it look more like a website then a blog. I’ll probably be adding some plugins to make that install of WordPress even more of a CMS.A couple days ago I was hired by The Batavian to film a football game. Filming was harder then I thought and I learned a lot. Howard Owens (the owner and publisher of The Batavian) gave me great feedback and advice. So next time my video will hopefully be much more polished and smooth. Editing took a couple of hours, and I ended up messing up a couple of the shots, but it was fun. Next time I’m going to make sure I watch the entire video twice before I render. And since the team we filmed won their game, I’m going to be filming them play again this Thursday.Well that’s it for now! I’ll hopefully keep the blog more updated next month.

Recently I have acquired the position of “Intern” at The Batavian. You can check out the post they did on me here. Basically I’ll be covering events in the community by writing short articles and providing video. I may also work on a couple special interest stories about local people. I’m excited about working with the staff at The Batavian and can’t wait to see what we can do together.

I just got my new macro and telephoto lens! I was so excited I had my mom take a picture of me holding the package.
