The title of this post is a line taken from one of  my all time favorite songs. Its a song done by a Christian metal band called The Great Commission. Its based on Proverbs 27:17 “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Although the band is quoting the NLT translation which states it as “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” Either way, you get the point. But as I was doing research on the web about the verse and the context of it, I came across this quote on Yahoo! Answers “Sometimes I don’t think this proverb is a positive one. the sound of iron on iron is not a pleasant one…” And I was left thinking, “Dude, what?”.So lets take it apart a bit shall we?“Iron sharpens iron…” So what is the process that goes into actually doing this? Well after doing a bit of research I found this quote in the comment of this article. “In the sharpening of iron with iron, both change — the sharpener and the sharpenee, if you will.”That’s an interesting side I have never totally thought about. When friends grow spiritually together and continue to keep each other accountable its not a one sided growth. Its continually building up both of you in your faith. From previous glancing at this verse I had always taken it from a one sided perspective. For example, my friend Destin and I are constantly learning together. Technology wise, and spiritually. And when one of us corrects the other I usually see that as a “sharpening” of that person being corrected. But not only is it “sharpening” the person being corrected, its also “sharpening” the correcter. If we take that look through all of our relationships I think we’d see a lot more growth then we normally do. My dad is always telling me you can learn something from everyone, whether its something to do, or not to do. And I think this is a great example of that, as in not only should we be building others up and encouraging them, but we should look for what we can learn through that process. So in response to the “not being positive”, I think its a HUGE positive. Growing in our faith and maturing as a Christian is always positive in the long run. How we get there, isn’t always “positive” from our limited perspective at times, but God’s infinite wisdom is sometimes beyond our comprehension. As the Word of Life quiet time has taught me through the years, now that we’ve stated and looked at what the writer is telling us, how can I apply this to my life? Personally my goal is to look for a growing moment in all things, whether I’m the one being taught, corrected, etc. or whether I’m the one doing the teaching, correcting, etc.

In this episode of “Media Mayhem” I’m going to show you how to put reference tape on your HDSLR’s screen so you can “fake” that 2:35:1 aspect ratio. To download the overlay image click here. You can find the video tutorial below.

Yesterday evening I rode my bike about a mile away from my house and shot a timelapse of the sunset. Went pretty well for only my third timelapse of the sunset ever. Still working on learning what settings work best, but I think it came out okay. Below you can see a photo I took with my phone of the set up I had. Sorry for the low qaulity.

I’m going to put together the actual video using the shots in a couple days, I’ll post it when I’m finished. While I was taking the sunset my friend Destin Danser sent me a text asking if I wanted to go walk around the town and do some night photography. His initial idea was to do some city landscapes, but we ended up doing night portraits instead.I luckily took my Kodak Zi8 along with me so we shot a short vlog of our portrait session. Unfortunatly I didn’t get any actual footage of us taking the photos and moving the lights around. But we’re going to try again next Tuesday so I’ll shoot another vlog and include that stuff. Just a side note, yes we are strange and I already know that. Below the video you can see some of the best shots we took. I think they came out decent for our first attempt at night portraits. If we had one more flash for a hair light, I think they would’ve turned out a multitude better. What do you guys think? Anything we could drastically improve besides the hair light? And here are some of my favorite photos from the evening.

Yesterday morning my good friend Destin Danser (Destin Danser’s Photography) and I went to Buffalo to pick up his new Sigma 70-200 2.8 lens. On the way there we had the usual conversations we have about cameras, technology, and so on.After getting his lens we went to Best Buy to check out the computers they had on display and to just hang out for awhile. Then we went to a park to location scout for a shoot Destin has this coming Sunday, which I have agreed to help him out with as his “assistant”. We had fun fooling around with his new lens and just looking around at the beautiful landscape.AND THEN we headed over to Indian Falls, a small local falls about 15 minutes away from my house, and took some photos of the falls to hopefully be used on the cover of a local restaurants new menus. So I’ve been trying to get a lot more video practicing in lately. So I volunteered to cover another football game for The Batavian. This one went a little bit better as far as know whats going on during the game, since I’m not a football fan, and actually getting audio in the final video. You can watch the final result below. Then today I was hired by a local church to film what they call their “Fall Fest”. They have games for the kids, free food, dance performances, and testimonies from some of the church members. I decided to mainly shoot the event with my Canon T2i with the 18-55 kit lens. I got some shots with my 80-200, but since it doesn’t have IS and it was a bit crowded there it spent most of the time in  my camera bag. So thats what I’ve been up to the last couple days.

A couple days ago Howard Owens sent me a message asking me to film a local football game for him, so I agreed to do it. I ended up getting there with my friend Destin a few minutes late, which turned out to be fine since nothing exciting happened while we werent there. Then I set up my monstrous Bogen 3066 tripod with my tiny HV20. After getting that level and set I realized I was going to have to move around the field the entire time. Which was a good thing for shooting, since the shots werent from just one angle, but killed my wrist. But it was good excercise and ended up being a ton of fun. I’m pretty happy with the way to video turned out, although because of technical difficulties, I didn’t get sound.Heres the video. Enjoy!
